DIY: Household Products

Tuesday on KOAM Morning News, as part of our "do it yourself" series, Dave Pylant and Tawnya Bach made homemade liquid laundry detergent and a mint sugar scrub.

Make your own liquid laundry detergent:

Yield: 5 gallons

1 cup of Borax
1 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (NOT baking soda!)
5.5oz Fels Naptha soap
5 gallon bucket with a lid
Essential oil for scent (optional)

Grate the Fels-Naptha soap. Add the soap shreds to a pot with 4 cups of hot water. Put the heat on medium-high, & stir until completely melted - about 10 minutes.

Fill up a 5 gallon bucket halfway with hot water. Pour in the melted soap mixture & give it a quick stir. Stir in the borax & washing soda. If you're using essential oil, now is the time to add it. You add in 1/2oz to 1oz, depending on how scented you want it.

Fill up the bucket with warm water, all the way to the top. Stir again.

Snap on the lid, & let it sit for 24 hours to gel up.

At this point, you can divide it up between different containers (empty laundry detergent bottles, etc.)

How to make a mint sugar scrub:

½ cup coconut oil
1½ – 2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon peppermint extract
1 drop green food coloring

Place coconut oil in a bowl and microwave on HIGH 15-25 seconds until softened.

Start by adding 1½ cups sugar to the oil, along with the peppermint extract and green food coloring. Mix until ingredients are well combined and food coloring is evenly distributed. If mixture is too wet, add another ½ cup sugar until scrub is to desired consistency.

Spoon scrub into air-tight containers (such as a mason jar) and decorate with twine or ribbon.

WEB EXTRA: Three ways to make homemade Febreze:

Recipe #1:

Insert a funnel into the top of a 32 oz. spray bottle. Pour 1/8 cup of your favorite fabric softener into your spray bottle. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to the bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with water. Replace the cap and shake the bottle well.

Recipe #2:

Fill a spray bottle with hot water. Leave an inch or so clearance at the top to allow room for the rest of the ingredients. Add 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol. Pour in 2 tablespoons of Purex crystals. Cap the bottle and shake it up until the crystals dissolve.

Recipe #3:

Using a funnel, pour 2 tablespoons of fabric softener into the bottle. Add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Remove the funnel and add six to ten drops of your favorite extract (like almond or vanilla extract) or an essential oil. Fill the rest of your bottle with water. Shake until well combined.
