4-staters reflect on the winter weather

Updated:

Often referred to as the winter blues, many can feel challenged during the coldest season.

"People just get in this idea that there is nothing they can do or they are stuck where they are at," said Eric Copeland, PsyD, at Mercy Hospital.

According to clinical psychologist Dr. Copeland, the wintertime can evoke feelings of sadness, loneliness or frustration. These 4-staters agree.

(Melissa) I'm tired of the cold," said Melissa Schleter.

"It depresses people when they can't get out," said Teena Schulik. "You know when you have to stay inside. Depression kicks in."

But not for all locals. Joplin resident Leeroy Wheeler doesn't like the cold, but he doesn't let it affect his life.

"I enjoy walking," said Wheeler.

Come rain, snow or shine, Wheeler walks everyday with his dog Molly, averaging four to six miles.

But not everyone is as brave as Wheeler. And sometimes it is just too cold to get outside. When this happens, Dr. Copeland recommends making the most out of this time indoors.

"Doing some things around the house, maybe getting out those old board games that you haven't played for who knows how long and getting the family around and playing those games."

A tactic Durossette uses when he's cooped up with his kids.

"Family board games. We try to come up with new stuff to do instead of being in front of the TV all day."

Galena Fire Chief Bill Hall says another fire was apparently set last night (Feb 19).  He says it was in an open field and there were no structures involved. Authorities say last night's fire was put out one hour after crews arrived. The fire Marshal is investigating.  Hall says the city does have a few leads, however, at this point they don't know if the fires from last week are connected to last night's fire.
