Gorillas Continue Win Streak With 62-49 Win Over Ichabods

Updated:

PITTSBURG - Lizzy Jeronimus led all scorers with 20 points and the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team limited Washburn University to 21 second-half points to claim a 62-49 victory in the regular season finale Saturday (Mar. 1) at John Lance Arena.

The Gorillas closed out the regular season with 12 consecutive wins, improving to 23-6 overall and 15-3 in MIAA play. Pitt State, the No. 23 team in the most recent WBCA/USA Today NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, has earned the No. 3 seed for the upcoming MIAA Postseason Tournament.

The Gorillas will meet the winner of a Monday (Mar. 3) match-up between sixth-seeded Washburn (16-10, 11-8 MIAA) and 11th-seeded Southwest Baptist University.

Jeronimus finished the game with 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Cathy Brugman added 13 points and seven rebounds, while Antqunita Reed also scored in double figures with 12 points.

Pitt State shot just 37 percent from the field in the game, making 20 of 54 shots, but the Gorillas clamped down on defense and limited Washburn to 31 percent shooting (18 of 58). Pitt State also outscored the Ichabods, 16-10, at the free throw line.

Three Pitt State seniors -- guards Alexa Bordewick and Y'Cedria Devers and forward Alex Muff -- played their final home game at John Lance Arena. Bordewick hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored six points in the game, while Devers and Muff added two points apiece.

Casyn Buchman was the lone WU player in double figures with 13 points.
