Pittsburg State University's Russ Jewett was named the 2014 MIAA Men's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year Tuesday (Mar. 4) after leading the Gorillas to the program's first indoor conference title in 19 years over the weekend.
Jewett helped Pitt State battle through adversity to score a narrow 1.5 point victory over second-place Missouri Southern to capture the MIAA indoor title at the Lions' home facility Sunday (Mar. 2). The Gorillas finished the meet with 130.5 points while the Lions totaled 129 points in a league race that came down to the final event – the 4x400m relay – before it was decided.
Jewett, who has led Pitt State to the last two MIAA Outdoor Championships in 2012 and 2013, earned conference coach of the year honors for the 31st time in his distinguished career, between the sports of men's and women's cross country and men's and women's track & field.
It marks Pitt State's first MIAA indoor title since 1995 and the program's third indoor title overall (1993, 1995, 2014).
