Missouri statewide tornado drill - KOAM TV 7

Missouri statewide tornado drill

Schools, businesses, and people everywhere else in Missouri were asked to participate in a statewide tornado drill today.  Six-hundred fifty five in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades at Joplin's South Middle School were among those who took part.

It's been almost three years now since the Joplin tornado.  One school counselor says she still sees students who are working through hardships from that disaster.

"Is it a secondary reason, or is there some stress and anxiety caused from it?  I would say there probably is, yes.  Because it's probably daily that in some form of a conversation, the tornado will come up," says Julie Narrell, a school counselor at South Middle School.

"They (families) need to establish those roles in each house in where they go, what they do, and we take it seriously the first time we hear the tornado siren.  We go seek shelter," says Narrell.

Counselors say practicing a safety plan will help ease strenuous fear of a tornado.
