Statewide tornado drill held throughout Missouri - KOAM TV 7

Statewide tornado drill held throughout Missouri

Updated:
Schools, businesses, and people throughout Missouri were asked to participate in a statewide tornado drill on Thursday.  655 students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades at Joplin's South Middle School were among those who took part.

It's been almost three-years now since the Joplin tornado, but one school counselor says she still sees students who are working through hardships from that disaster.

"Is it a secondary reason, or is there some stress and anxiety caused from it - I would say there probably is, yes, because it's probably daily that in some form of a conversation, the tornado will come up," says Julia Narrell, a counselor at South Middle School.

Counselors say it's important to talk with children about evacuation routes for an emergency.   Children need to still feel they're in control of their own safety and counselors say this will help ease their fears.
