Weather radio transmitter to be installed in Joplin

A new 300-watt weather radio transmitter will soon be installed on top of Joplin's city hall.  Right now there's one NOAA radio transmitter near Neosho and one near Avilla, and city officials say many people near Joplin aren't getting a clear weather radio signal.

The new tower will be owned and operated by Joplin.  The project will cost $50,000 and come from the city's general fund budget.

"I think the expense is well worth it," says Joplin Emergency Manager Keith Stammer.  "Our number one and first effort in helping people be safe is forewarned is forearmed.  We want people to know ahead of time what's going to happen.  Weather radio is a very good way of doing that."

City officials say a slight delay in obtaining construction materials and other related items means the new tower will be up and running by June.
