Women's basketball drops MIAA Tournament contest 78-57 to Fort Hays State

Press Release MSSU:

The Missouri Southern women's basketball was unable to overcome a cold second half shooting from the field as Fort Hays State raced past the Lions 78-57 this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Tournament at Municipal Auditorium.

Southern (19-8) was led in scoring by senior forward Dominique Mosley with 13 points as she hit 7-of-8 from the free throw line and grabbed seven rebounds. Alexis Fitzpatrick added 11 points hitting three three-pointers while Nicole Hartzog chipped in 10 points. Sharese Jones led the Lions with eight rebounds and she added eight points as well. The Lions had a tough afternoon shooting from the field as tough defense from Hays limited them to only a 32.7% (18-55) clip, including being held to 23.1% (6-26) in the second half. The Lions did have a solid day from the free throw line as they went 16-of-18 (.889).

Fort Hays (21-7) was led in scoring by guard Beth Bohuslavsky with 15 points as she hit 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Tera Ingalsbe came off the bench to score 14 points as she nailed three three-pointers. Two other Tigers finished in double figures as Kate Lehman scored 13 points and Chelsea Mason added 11. The Tigers shot 24-of-55 (.436) from the field as they hit 8-of-19 (.421) from beyond the arc. Hays got to the free throw line 32 times connecting on 22 of them for a 68.8% clip.

After the first four minutes of play saw only a 5-4 edge for Hays, the fifth-seeded Tigers went on a 10-0 run before a jumper from Shawnee Phillips stopped the threat. With Fitzpatrick hitting a three-pointer from the top of the key cutting the lead to 19-11 with 12:12 to play in the first half, Hays ripped off a 16-6 run to take a 35-17 lead making four three-pointers in that stretch. The Lions answered back with a 8-0 run of their own hitting consecutive three pointers from Fitzpatrick and Tee Singleton and getting a jumper from Mosley to make it a 35-25 contest. After Hays regained a 11-point advantage, the Lions scored four of the final five points of the half to head into locker room only down 41-33.

The Lions looked to claw their way back into the game in the second half, but Hays had other ideas as they scored nine of the second half's 11 points to go up 50-35. After Southern cut the lead to 11 three times over the next 3:36, Hays put an end to Southern's chances to get back in the game going on a 11-0 run to take a commanding 66-44 lead with 8:30 to play. The Lions continued to battle as a jumper by Mosley from the left corner ended the run, but Southern was unable to get any closer than 17 as they fell by a final of 78-57.

With the loss, the Lions are unlikely to move into the top eight in the regional rankings as the end their season 19-8. The 19 wins on the year are tied for the most wins in a season in the last 18 years as Southern also reached 19 wins in 2004 and 2009.
