Softball Moves Doubleheader at Southern

Pittsburg State softball's non-conference doubleheader against Missouri Southern scheduled to be played Saturday, has been moved up a day to Friday.

The two teams will now face off at 4 & 6 p.m. at Lea Kungle Field in Joplin, Mo., Friday, March 7.

Pitt State is 9-4 on the season. The team is led by senior Tiffany Brown, the NFCA National Hitter of the Week, with a .487 average, 19 runs scored, 26 RBI and 10 home runs. Freshman Nicole Nease also hits over .400 with a .429 average. Senior Brenna George adds a .333 batting average with 14 runs scored.

Junior Sam Grove, the MIAA Pitcher of the Week, anchors the Pitt State pitching staff with a 6-0 record and a 1.33 ERA. She has thrown 47.1 innings and is holding opponents to a .201 opponent batting average.

Missouri Southern is 4-6 on the season. The offense is led by Dawn Grass with a .469 average. Chloe Brown adds a .450 batting average and shares the team lead in RBI with eight. Michala Wood also has eight RBI on the season. Alana Hester leads the team with seven runs scored.

Shelby Mitchell has the best ERA of the Lion pitchers with a 3.77 ERA. Sarah Williams leads the team with 26.2 innings pitched and a 2-1 record. Haley Kinnisonhas thrown 24.1 innings and leads the team in strikeouts with 19. She has a 2-3 record and a 4.60 ERA

    Crews Battle Vehicle Fire On Highway 69

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
