Relentless SBU Team Ends MIAA Tournament for Gorillas

A rebound and a putback with .6 seconds by Southwest Baptist's Alex Botkin gave the Bearcats a 67-65 win and ended the MIAA Tournament for the third seeded Gorillas.

The Gorillas will now wait until Sunday evening to see if they are selected for the NCAA Tournament.

Antqunita Reed came off the bench to lead the Gorillas with 16 points. Lizzy Jeronimus added 13 and a team-leading seven rebounds. Cathy Brugman scored 11 points, all in the second half.

The game was tight the whole way. There were 13 ties and 15 lead changes. Neither team had more than seven point lead. SBU's largest lead was five, 32-27, with five seconds left in the first half. The Gorillas' largest lead was seven, 46-39, at the 10:46 mark in the second half.

After the Bearcats largest lead, Reed hit a jumper as time expired in the first half to lead to a 32-29 SBU lead at the half. 

Alex Muff brought the Gorillas within one, 32-31, to start the second half. Pitt State took its first lead since the 4:06 mark in the first half on free throws by Brigit Hesser with 15:04 to go. The Bearcats built up a three-point lead again, but PItt State used a 10-0 run to earn their largest lead of the game.

Southwest Baptist was able to cut the lead down to two again, but Pitt State kept stretching it back to six. Two Alexa Bordewick threes sandwiched a three by SBU's Dilonna Johnson, giving the Gorillas a 64-58 lead with 2:13 to go. 

With 1:19 on the clock, Lucy Morgan hit a jumper to cut the Pitt State lead to three. The Gorillas missed a layup on the other end. Botkin nailed a three to tie the game at 65-65 with 35 seconds to go. Another failed jumper for the Gorillas gave the Bearcats the ball back with 16 seconds to go. Jacqui Zelenka missed a layup with two seconds to go. That is when Botkin grabbed the rebound and put up the winning shot.

Zelenka led all scorers with 19 points and eight rebounds. Botkin added 10. Lissette Pasencia scored 18, 12 from the free throw line.
