Softball Falls in First MIAA Games

The Pitt State softball team lost its first two MIAA games of the season in two one-run decisions to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla., 5-4 and 3-2. The Gorillas are now 11-6 on the season. The RiverHawks are 17-7 and 5-1 in MIAA play.

In both games, the Gorillas made late rallies, but were not able to get the last runs they needed to pull out the win.

Pitt State lost game one, 5-4. The team scored its four runs on 10 hits and one Northeastern State error. The Riverhawks scored their five runs on four hits

Bailey Letts was 2-for-2 with a sac fly, a walk, a run and an RBI. Alex Perez also had two hits in a 2-for-3 performance. Brown had only one hit, but had three RBI, including a two-run home run.

Sam Grove took her first loss of the season in the pitching circle. She gave up four hits and seven walks. She struck out two batters and hit two.

In the 3-2 game two loss, the Gorillas scored two runs on three hits and one NSU error, while the RiverHawks scored three runs on seven hits.

Letts, Rynard and Alex Perez each had hits for the Gorillas. Perez had the only RBI.

Haleigh Sills pitched the complete game in the loss to fall to 3-3 on the season. She walked three and struck out four.

In game one, Pitt State scored first in the top of the third. With one out, Cheslyn Mitchell and Jordan Bradshaw hit back-to-back base hits with one out. Brenna George reached on an error to load the bases. Letts hit a sacrifice fly to center to score the first run of the game.

Back-to-back hits by George and Letts started the fifth for the Gorillas. Letts' hit allowed George to move to third. Brown reached on a fielder's choice that put Letts out and second, but George was able to use her speed to score and put the Gorillas up 2-0.

The bottom of the fifth was a big inning for the home team. The RiverHawks scored four runs on two hits, including a two-out, three-run double to go up 4-2. Prior to the fifth Grove had given up only one hit to Northeastern State.

The bottom of the sixth saw the RiverHawks add another run to go up 5-2.

Pitt State rallied in the top of the seventh. Bailey Letts drew a two-out walk. Brown followed that with her 11th home run of the year to put the Gorillas down by just one, 5-4.

Alex Perez opened the scoring in the top of the second in game two with her first career home run.

Northeastern State tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded walk.

Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth when Northeastern State scored two on back-to-back doubles to go up 3-1.

McKenzie Rynard started the top of the sixth with a base hit to right field. She scored on three straight wild pitches to make the score 3-2.

Pitt State will take the field again tomorrow (March 15) at 10 a.m. for a doubleheader with Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Okla. The games will be played at the Edmond North High School.
