Softball wins a pair on day two of MWSU Invitational

St. Joseph, MO - Using a shutout followed by an offensive explosion, the Missouri Southern softball team won a pair of games on day two of the MWSU Invitational winning 2-0 over Central Missouri before taking a wild 13-7 decision over Concordia-St. Paul.

Southern (10-18) was led by a host of Lions who had great days from the plate with senior right fielder Shelby Romines leading the way with six hits in seven at-bats smacking two home runs and a double along with driving in six runs. Dawn Grass and Chloe Brown each had three hits each as Brown smacked a home run, her seventh of the year.

Playing as the home team against conference foe Central Missouri, the Lions and Jennies found themselves scoreless through the first three innings before Southern got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth as Romines hit a RBI single to second base driving in Jessica Castoe from third to take a 1-0 lead. After starting pitcher Shelby Mitchell sent down UCM in order in the fifth and limited them to two hits in the sixth, the Lions added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth as Castoe hit a one-out double to right center. After moving to third on a single to left by Grass, Castoe came around to score on a single to right center by Romines as Southern went up 2-0.

Despite getting runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, Mitchell stranded the two Jennies runners as she got the final two batters to strike out and ground out to pick up her first career win pitching the complete game as she only allowed five hits and struck out six.

Again playing as the home team in the second game, the Lions quickly found them down 2-0 after the first half inning, but responded in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own as Rachel Harding hit a two-run home run to knot the game at two apiece after one. The Golden Bears added a run in the top of the second and one more in the fourth to go up 4-2 before Romines hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3.

Concordia continued the scoring barrage in the top of the fifth as they tacked on three runs to take a 7-3 lead before the Lions exploded for their highest single inning output of the season in the bottom of the fifth as they responded with eight runs of their own to go up 11-7 after five innings. The scoring got started with a two-run home run by Brown that drove in Alana Hester, who led off the inning with a single. Harding followed with a double as she was driven in by a Grass single. Replogle kept the hitting going with a single moving Grass to second which was followed by a Romines double that plated Grass. After a pitching change for the Golden Bears and a pair of strikeouts for the Lions, Castoe resumed the scoring output for Southern as she doubled driving in Replogle and Romines. Hester followed with a double plating Castoe and finally Brown doubled driving in Hester.

The Lions added two more runs in the sixth for good measure as Romines hit a one-out home run to give Southern a 13-7 advantage. Haley Kinnison picked up her sixth win of the year as she pitched the final four innings relieving starter Sarah Williams. Kinnison allowed six hits, three earned runs while striking out four.

Southern wraps up action at the MWSU Invitational on Sunday taking on Wayne State (Neb.) (13-7) at noon and then playing St. Cloud State (4-11) at 4 p.m.
