Joplin Schools Board of Education candidates focus of media panel

Updated:
Eight candidates are seeking three seats up for election in the Joplin Schools Board of Education.

With the April 8th election nearing, it is essential for residents to have a thorough understanding of the positions of each candidate.

This was the reason behind the forum Candidate Connection.

Held at Missouri Southern, the program presented a way for media professionals to engage in the race; to ask questions and learn more about each candidate. Topics discussed ranged from common care standards to teacher performance assessment.

According to experts, this panel is unique, as it allows those seasoned in asking questions to hold the reigns.

"As media, we're following what's going on in the market, we're following what the issues are and I think that the media is capable of asking the questions.," said Mike Beatty, president and publisher of The Joplin Globe. "Plus it's our responsibility to make sure the right questions are asked."

Although the panel was not open to the public, it allowed residents to submit questions beforehand via Facebook. They could also find updates via Twitter.

"They get to see it in multimedia," said Beatty. "They get to watch it on television and they also get to read about it in the newspaper. So it covers the breadth of the market and allows people to make the right decisions during election time."
