Brown Sets New School Record in Split With Griffons

St. Joseph, MO - Tiffany Brown's school record setting home run in the first inning of game two, and another in the third inning, helped the Pittsburg State softball team (16-16, 3-7MIAA) to a doubleheader split with the Missouri Western Griffons (20-14, 5-7 MIAA) on Saturday (March 29) at the Missouri Western Softball Field. Missouri Western won game one, 3-2, while the Gorillas took game two, 6-2.

Brown set the school records for both single season and career home runs. She now has 19 home runs on the season and 48 for her career.

In game two, Pitt State tallied six runs on five hits and to Missouri Western errors. The Griffons had two runs on seven hits and three Pitt State errors.

Sam Grove pitched the complete game for the Gorillas to improve to 9-6 on the season. Only one of the runs she gave up was earned. She struck out three batters and walked one.

Brown has two of the Gorillas' hits in the game, and all six RBI. Cheslyn Mitchell also had two hits, a double and a base hit.

Brenna George led off game two with an infield base hit. Mitchell followed with a double down the left field line. Brown then stepped up to the plate and hit her school record tying home run.

Missouri Western scored two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the first.

Neither team scored in the second.

The Gorillas added to their lead in the top of the third. George reached on an error. Mitchell followed with a base hit to left. Brown added her second home run of the game, this one to right center, for a 6-2 Pitt State lead.

Neither team scored again in the game. Missouri Western threatened and got runners to third twice, but were not able to plate another run.

The Gorillas also scored first in game one. McKenzie Rynard led off the second with a home run.

The team added another run on the third. With one out, Mitchell hit a double. She scored on a base hit up the middle by Brown for a 2-0 lead.

Missouri Western cut that lead to one run in the bottom of the third as the Griffons capitalized on two hits and a passed ball.

The Griffons tied the game with a leadoff home run in the sixth. Two hits and a wild pitch allowed the go ahead run to score, putting Missouri Western up 3-2.

The Gorillas got only one runner on in te top of the seventh, allowing the Griffons the win.

Kylie Harpst took the loss for the Gorillas in the game to move her record to 3-4 on the year. She gave up eight hits and three runs, only two of which were earned. She walked one batter and struck out three.

The Gorillas had five hits in the game, each by a different player.

Pitt State will now return home for its next 18 games beginning with a doubleheader with Lindenwood on Tuesday (April 1) at 5 and 7 p.m.
