Full Slate of MIAA Competition on Tap for Gorilla Softball

The Pittsburg State softball team has a full slate of MIAA compeition scheduled for this week at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas will play each of their next 18 games at home.

The week opens on Tuesday, April 1 at 2 & 4 p.m. against Lindenwood. Game times were moved as rain is expected to move into the area in the evening. The weekend features a Friday doubleheader with No. 9 Emporia State beginning at 3 p.m. and a Saturday doubleheader with Washburn at 2 and 4 p.m.

There will be an Early Egg Hunt for all kids 10 & under at 3 p.m. on Saturday and all PSU Softball Alumni will be recognized between games of the doubleheader.

The Gorillas enter the week with a 16-16 overall record and a 3-7 record in conference play. The team is currently 11th in the conference standings.

Pitt State hits .304 as a team and averages almost six runs per game. The Gorillas have hit 42 home runs on the season, only 17 less than the school record (set in 2012) with 22 games to go.

The offense has four players hitting over .300 on the season, led by Pitt State's career home run leader, Tiffany Brown. Brown hits .455 and leads the team in RBI (54), runs (38), hits (45) and home runs (19). She leads the nation in home runs per game (0.59) and home runs. She is fourth in RBI per game and third in slugging percentage (1.071). She leads the MIAA in slugging percentage, on base percentage, RBI, home runs, total bases and walks and is second in the league in batting average and runs scored.

McKenzie Rynard is the Gorillas second leading hitter with a .407 average. She leads the team in doubles with nine and has also hit nine home runs on the season. Brenna George adds a .357 batting average. She has scored 33 runs on the season and leads the team in stolen bases with 10. She is the program's career record holder for stolen bases. Bailey Letts add a .323 average with 24 runs scored and 17 RBI.

The Pitt State pitching staff has a 3.52 ERA and allows opponents a .295 batting average. Sam Grove has pitched the majority of the innings, 99.1. She has a 9-6 record. Haleigh Sills has a 4-5 record in 61.2 innings pitched, while Kylie Harpst has a 3-4 record in 42.1 innings.

LIndenwood is 11-14 overall and 5-5 in MIAA play. The Lions are ninth in the conference standings. Last weekend the team split doubleheaders with Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State.

The Lions hit .283 as a team, led by MIAA batting average leader Courtney Opich with a .463 batting average. The team averages just over four runs a game. Lindenwood's pitching staff has a 3.94 ERA and allows opponents a .305 batting average. The team primarily uses two pitchers, Morgan Colvis has  6-5 record and a 3.59 ERA in 68.1 innings. Kendall Ryndak has thrown 59.2 innings with a 2.58 ERA and a 4-5 record.

No. 9 Emporia State leads the MIAA with a 30-7 record overall and a perfect 10-0 conference record. The Gorillas are one of the seven teams that has earned a victory over the Hornets this season, as the team got the 3-2 win at the Missouri Western Invitational on March 21.

The Hornets hit .312 as a team, while scoring almost six runs per game. Seven different players hit over .300 for the season, with three having 25 or more RBI on the year.

Emporia State utilizes two pitchers, Kaitlyn Caston has a 2.39 ERA and a 21-5 record in 158.1 innings. Eryn Stockman is 9-2 with a 3.56 ERA in 100.1 innings.

Washburn is just above .500 at 15-14 and has a 7-5 MIAA record to put them sixth in the standings. Most recently the team lost four games to Emporia State. The Ichabods will play Central Missouri on Tuesday before coming to Pittsburg on Saturday.

The Ichabods hit .314 as a team and average seven runs a game. The team has hit 50 home runs already this season, led by Lauren Thimmesch with 12. Nine of 13 hitters have hits at least one home run this season. Seven players hit .300 or better, led by Marina Quimby with a .402 average.

Thimmesch is also a leader among the Ichabod pitchers with a 7-4 record and a 4.36 ERA. Samantha Carson adds a 6-2 record and a 4.57 ERA in 56.2 innings. Kaylee Erickson has also pitched over 50 innings with 58.0 innings. She has a 2-4 record and a 6.16 ERA. As a group the Ichabod pitchers have a 5.18 ERA and allow opponents a .328 average.
