Gorillas Can't Complete Rally Against Hornets

Updated:
Press Release PSU:

McKenzie Rynard hit game-tying home runs in successive innings but the Pittsburg State University softball team couldn't complete its rally against Emporia State University as the Gorillas fell, 14-9, in nine innings.

The seventh-ranked Hornets (32-7, 12-0 MIAA) claimed an 8-2 win over the Gorillas (17-19, 4-10 MIAA) in the first game of the MIAA doubleheader earlier Friday (Apr. 4).

Rynard belted her 10th home run of the season with no outs in the seventh inning and Pitt State trailing 6-4. Tiffany Brown, who connected on her 20th home run of the season earlier in the game, drew a leadoff walk to open the inning.

The Hornets countered Rynard's shot with three runs in the top of the eighth to retake a 9-6 advantage. In the Gorillas' half of the inning, Brenna George hit a one-out single and ESU elected to intentionally walk Brown with two outs and bring the tying run to the plate in the bat of Rynard. Rynard came through in the clutch again with the three-run shot to extend the contest.

The Hornets plated five more runs in the top of the ninth however to put the game out of reach, including a two-out grandslam by Brenda Novelo to punctuate the inning.

ESU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning in the opener and cruised to the 8-2 win. Brown walked twice and singled in a run for the Gorillas. Kylie Harpst also hit a solo home run, her first of the season.

The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Apr. 5) at the PSU Softball Complex when they host MIAA rival Washburn University in an MIAA doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. (CDT).
