Week Brings Full Schedule for Gorilla Softball

Updated:
Press Release PSU:

The new week brings another for schedule for Pitt State Softball. The Gorillas will play four doubleheaders April 8-13, three of which will be MIAA doubleheaders. The Gorillas open the week against Rogers State at 4/6 p.m., followed by Wednesday's meeting with Missouri Southern, also at 4/6 p.m. On the weekend, the Gorillas will play Fort Hays State on Saturday at noon/2 p.m. and Nebraska-Kearney at 11 a.m./1 p.m. All games will be played at the PSU Softball Complex.

There are also several events planned in conjunction with this week's games. Wednesday is not only a Sonic Trophy Series doubleheader, but also Girl Scout Day. All area Girl Scouts are invited to the game and there will be fun activities for them to take part in. Saturday is Pitt State's annual Melanoma Awareness Day. The team will wear all black uniforms and fans are invited to wear black, the color for melanoma awareness. Via Christi will be doing free skin cancer screenings and will have free sunscreen available as well as information on the prevention and detection of skin cancer. Sunday will be Senior Day. The Gorillas will honor seniors Haleigh Sills, Breanna McCracken, Brenna George and Tiffany Brown.

The Gorillas enter the week with an 18-20 record and a 5-11 record in MIAA play. The team is 2-4 in its last six games, despite scoring six runs a game. Pitt State hits .305 as a team, while opponents hit only slightly less at .295. The Gorillas have hit 51 home runs this season, just eight short of the school record set in 2012. Brenna George hits .348 and is second on the team in runs (39) and hits (48). She leads the team in stolen bases with 11. Chelsyn Mitchell (.313) and Bailey Letts (.310) also hit over .300.

Pitt State's pitchers have a 3.80 ERA. Sam Grove has pitched the most innings with a 2.97 ERA and a 9-8 record in 106.0 innings pitched. Kylie Harpst has thrown 64.0 innings, and has a 5-6 record, while Haleigh Sills has a 4-5 record in 74.1 innings pitched.

Rogers State is 10-24 overall. The team has lost four of their last five games. The Hillcats and Gorillas split a doubleheader in Claremore the second week of the season. The Gorillas won the first game, 9-2, while Rogers State took game two, 6-5.

The Hillcats hit .273 as a team. Two players hit over .300 on the season. The team averages just under four runs a game. The Rogers State pitchers have a 4.75 ERA. Two pitchers see the majority of the innings for the team. Yolanda Rios has struck out 125 batters so far this season.

Missouri Southern is 14-26 overall and 6-10 in the MIAA. The Lions are currently 10th in the conference standings, just two places above the Gorillas. The team has won four of its last six games, sweeping Lindenwood and splitting with Emporia State and Washburn. Southern hits .274 as a team, while allowing opponents a .313 average. The Lions score about four runs a game. Four players are hitting .300 or better on the season. The Missouri Southern pitchers have a 6.58 ERA.

Fort Hays State is fifth in the MIAA standings with a 23-16 overall record and a 12-8 league record. The team has lost four of its last six games, splitting doubleheaders with Lindenwood and Northwest Missouri, while being swept by Missouri Western. The games were decided by an average of three runs. The Tigers hit .289 as a team with a .391 slugging percentage. Four players hit .300 or better. The Fort Hays State pitchers have a 2.93 ERA and hold opponents to a .265 batting average. Two pitchers throw the majority of the innings, while three others throw limited immings.

Nebraska-Kearney is just above Pitt State in the conference standings with a 9-23 overall record and a 7-13 record in the conference. In their last three doubleheaders, the Lopers swept Lincoln, lost two to Missouri Western and split with Northwest Missouri. UNK hits .286 as a team with four players hitting .300 or better, including one that is just below a .400 average. The UNK pitching staff has a 5.43 ERA and allows opponents a .343 batting average.
