PSU students need the help of SEK residents

Communication students at Pittsburg State University are asking residents in Crawford and Cherokee counties to share their perceptions of homelessness and poverty in Southeast Kansas.

The students will then take that data and identify possible donor base support for the C.H.O.I.C.E.S Homeless Shelter in Pittsburg.

The shelter closed in March due to the lack of funding.

Elizabeth Lanier and Ella Lewis are two of the 15 students enrolled in the Strategic Planning in Communication Campaigns course at Pittsburg State.

"Prior to this project I didn't know there was a homeless shelter in Pittsburg," said Lewis.

The students developed an online survey, and need at least 1,000 responses, which has been a challenge.

"That's been the hardest part, once we get that we can put it all together," said Lanier.

Instructor Josh Letner hopes students walk away with lifelong lessons.

"Their learning about the human condition, and learning about people they didn't have the opportunity in the course of their life."

Emergency funds from the Kansas Housing Resource Corporation were allocated to the shelter from the city. Those funds will allow the shelter to reopen in May, that funding will last until the end of June.
