Southern (22-19) fell behind early as Pittsburg State (15-27) scored an unearned run in each of the first and second innings to go up 2-0 early on.

The Lions went scoreless until the sixth inning when the Lions scored three in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 3-2. Austin White singled to center with one out and Logan Moon doubled to left field to put runners at second and third. Matt Smith drove home White with a sacrifice fly, and the Lions also picked up RBIs in the inning from Mitchell Osburn, scoring Moon and Dusty Harper, scoring Axel Johnson

Southern scored three more in the seventh. Brandon Weller doubled down the left field line and moved to third on a ground out. Zack Steadman singled to right center to score Weller. White sacrificed Steadman to second and Moon singled home Steadman with a shot to right center. Moon scored on an infield single from Matt Smith when the throw went past the first basemen.

Pitt scored two runs in the eighth, but Stephen Vaughn came in and shut the Gorillas down for the save. Skylar Hill started and went seven innings, striking out four and walking just one. He allowed just three hits and no earned runs. Drew Noble threw a third of an inning with a strikeout and Vaughn threw the final inning and two thirds, striking out three and walking none, while holding the Gorillas hitless.

Vaughn picked up save number two and Hill moved his record to 4-1 on the season. Steadman went 3-4 in the game with a run and an RBI, while Moon went 2-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI. Harper had two hits and an RBI, while Smith and Osburn drove in a run each. Johnson, Weller and White had runs scored.
