PRESS RELEASE MSSU:

The Missouri Southern softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at William Jewell this afternoon coming back to win game one 3-2 before falling 9-8 in game two at William Jewell Softball Field.

Missouri Southern 3, William Jewell 2

The Lions (16-32) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Shelby Romines hit a two-out solo home run. William Jewell (20-18) tied the game at one in the third on a sacrifice fly before the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead in the sixth as Kelsey Morgan led off the inning with a triple coming around to score on a sacrifice fly. Southern responded with two runs in the seventh to re-take a 3-2 lead as Jessica Castoe hit a one-out single moving to second on an error by the WJU left fielder. After Romines drew a two-out walk to put runners at first and second, a error by the Cardinal's center fielder on Dawn Grass allowed Castoe and Romines to score.

Starting pitcher Sarah Williams got the final three outs in the seventh to pick up her sixth win as she pitched her eighth complete game allowing only six hits, two run, one earned while striking out three. Six different players tallied one hit each.

William Jewell 9, Missouri Southern 8

Southern again took a 1-0 lead in game two on a Kathryn Goins fielder's choice. WJU scored one in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at one before platting six runs in the third on four hits taking a 7-1 advantage. The Lions quickly answered with five runs in the top of the fourth as they scored a run on a Romines single, three more on a home run by Goins, her sixth of the year, and a RBI double by Brooklyn Farrell to cut the lead to 7-6.

The Cardinals added solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make it 9-6 before Southern amounted one last rally in the top of the sixth as Goins led off the inning getting on a base on a error by Jewell's third baseman. Alexah Replogle followed with her first career home run cutting the Cardinal's lead to 9-8. The Lions went down in order in the seventh dropping a hard-fought game. Haley Kinnison took the loss as Shelby Mitchell and Williams also made appearances.

Southern returns to action next Tuesday hosting Rogers State (Okla.) (12-29, 5-13 Heartland) in their final regular season home doubleheader at 4 p.m.
