NEO student Charlie McQuigg receives the 2014 Newman Civic Fellows Award

Miami, Okla. – Wednesday, April 16, 2014 – Charlie McQuigg, a student at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (NEO), and intern for the digital communication department was recently announced as one of the nationwide winners for the Newman Civic Fellows Award. This recognition is for college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. Recommendations for this prestigious award are by college and university presidents.

McQuigg is from Miami, Okla. and graduated from Miami High School in 2011. He is a music composition major and is emphasizing a minor in film score. He is also a Phi Theta Kappa member. He will be continuing his studies at Tulsa University this fall on an academic scholarship.

McQuigg was a co-founder for the community and campus news show, NEO13. He partnered with Delayna Fitzgerald, co-founder and president of the club, to recruit college students into a news team, helping turn this idea into a reality. Now NEO13 has grown substantially since its official air date on March 1, 2013 and continues to thrive and bring the latest updates and entertainment for their viewers.

NEO13 team member, Hayley Jamil said, “It’s very humbling to see him earn this award. I’ve learned and enjoyed my time with him on NEO13 News. He was truly the backbone, along with Delayna, in keeping this show alive. Because of their efforts to recruit students to help, I joined with optimism and high hopes. He became not only my team member, but my friend. He is very creative and has ambition, so I can see why he was chosen for this award.”

McQuigg is the son of Alan McQuigg and Lisa Burrows. He began interning for the NEO’s digital communication program in the fall of 2013. He was funded by the President Partners Program, which was established by the NEO Development Foundation in the fall of 2009 to implement various campus projects.

The Newman Civic Fellows Award is made and given in honor of Frank Newman, who selflessly committed his life to evoke change through education reform. His inspiring leadership lasted for five decades, and still implements the value of dedication, creativity, and leadership amongst individuals because of this award. Newman Civic Fellow’s goal is to create a unique band of leaders to inspire and to keep hope alive for one another in college and the road ahead, and NEO is gratified to have McQuigg represent this noteworthy award.
