Pittsburg Chamber announces Small Business of the Year Finalists

Small Business of the Year Finalists Announced

PITTSBURG, KS - The Pittsburg Area Chamber of Commerce and BKD, LLP have announced the finalists for the 2014 Small Business of the Year Award. Based upon evidence of successful operations, as well as significant contributions to the community, the following businesses have been recognized as finalists for the award:

Jim Radell Construction
Kannarr Eye Care
The Finishing Touch

“We had a tremendous group of nominees for this year’s award,” said Devin Gorman, Pittsburg Area Chamber vice president of operations. “All three of the finalists are highly recognizable in our community and each one exemplifies what it means to be a successful small business.”

The finalists were selected by the Small Business of the Year Review Committee and over the next few weeks the committee will conduct interviews with each of the finalists. The winner of the 2014 Small Business of the Year Award will be announced at the chamber’s Annual Banquet on May 22.

Jim Radell Construction Contact – Steven Radell – 620.231.7166

Started in Jim Radell’s garage in 1968, Jim Radell Construction now has 25 employees and has grown into one of the area’s most trusted underground utility companies. The company is unique and highly specialized, focusing on fiber optics, pipe bursting, directional boring, and electro-fusion welding of thermal plastics.

The company recently moved into a new office building and has added additional employees due to demand. They currently contract with AT&T, Cox Communications, CRAW-KAN, Westar and the City of Pittsburg for services.

Under the leadership of president Steven Radell, the company is giving to the community and for his efforts in creating a recycling pickup program, Steven was named 2013 Pittsburg Area Young Professionals Volunteer of the Year.

Kannarr Eye Care was opened in 2009 following the purchase of the Grene Vision Group office by Dr. Kannarr. In 2011, along with Dr. Chris Jacquinot, Kannarr moved the clinic to its current location. They have recently added a satellite office in Girard, KS, and are considering expansion of the Pittsburg office to meet demand.

Dr. Kannarr and Dr. Jacquinot are active in the community and have served on numerous boards, including the Pittsburg Area Chamber, Pittsburg Area Young Professionals, Rotary, Mt. Carmel Foundation and others. The office staff donates time to conduct school screenings and to provide eye care to the indigent. Dr. Kannarr has also given back to the community by serving as chair of the Economic Development Advisory Committee for over two years, during which time the group has seen the expansion and growth of several local businesses.

The Finishing Touch was established in 1981 and has become one of the area’s leading retail and wholesale picturing framing businesses. Although they have numerous clients across the United States, their largest client is Pittsburg’s own Mpix (Miller’s Professional Imaging).

The Finishing Touch has 12 full time employees and supports the community by providing space and services for the Pittsburg Art Walk events, contributing to the Colonial Fox Theatre, and donating to the PSU Scholarship fund. Owners Michael & Ruth Ellen Simpson give back to the community as well through their services to the Downtown Organization, Wesley House, First United Methodist Church, Mirza Shrine, and many other local organizations.
