Joplin elementary students help build rain gardens

Updated:
Students at Eastmoreland Elementary in Joplin, got their hands a little dirty on Wednesday.

A group of 2nd and 3rd graders planted a variety of flowers inside a rain garden. The garden is in the schools outdoor atrium.

The project is possible through a collaboration between the city of Joplin and the Audubon Center.

Eight rain gardens will be built throughout the city.

"A number of them are at local schools, community organizations, and non-profit groups. So it will help capture that rain water, and let it soak back into the soil instead of being dumped into the nearest stream and possibly carrying those pollutants," said Chris Pistole, Education Director at the Audubon Center.
