City of Joplin names new Deputy Fire Chief

Joplin Fire Chief Mitch Randles recently named James Furgerson as Deputy Fire Chief. Furgerson has 18 years of fire service experience, including 13 years with the Joplin Fire Department.

Furgerson joined the Fire Department in 2001 and was promoted to Driver in July of 2004. In 2006 he was named Captain. Prior to this recent appointment, Furgerson served as Interim Deputy Fire Chief since February, 2014.

He is a Missouri State Certified Fire Investigator, Inspector and Instructor. Furgerson is also a paramedic and hazardous material (Haz-Mat) technician. He has his Associates Degree in Fire Science, and will be graduating in July 2014 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Missouri Southern State University.

As Deputy Chief, Furgerson will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Fire Department. In Chief Randles’ absence, Furgerson is responsible for the entirety of the Fire Department.

“I look forward to serving in this capacity,” said Furgerson. “The City is rebuilding and growing, and I look forward to leading the fire department, and assisting Chief Randles as we grow to meet the future needs of the community.”

The Deputy Fire Chief position became vacant upon former Deputy Chief Jim Perkins’ retiring in February, 2014.
