Via Christi Hospital and Mount Carmel Foundation Paint It All Pink

PITTSBURG, Kan. (May 15, 2014) – All are invited to take part and help Via Christi Hospital and the Mount Carmel Foundation form a giant pink human ribbon on the lawn of the Via Christi Cancer Center tomorrow, Friday, May 16, at noon. The ribbon is part of the Foundation’s Paint It All Pink celebration, helping spread the message that breast cancer awareness should take place all year long. This event also encourages early detection, especially through annual mammograms.

“Paint It All Pink raises funds for the Via Christi Cancer Center patients through t-shirts and flower sales, plus this year the proceeds from the Hospital Picnic 5K went to the Cancer Center Fund as well,” Mount Carmel Foundation Senior Director Johnna Norton said. “The Cancer Center Fund through the Mount Carmel Foundation pays for gas cards, prescriptions, nutritional supplements, and other needs of our patients who are receiving world class treatment right here in Pittsburg.”

In recent years, perhaps coinciding with the decline in prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause, there has been a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part to better due to screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options. Numerous studies have shown that early detection with mammography saves lives and increases treatment options. According to the American College of Surgeons, more than 2.9 million US women with a history of breast cancer were alive on January 1, 2012. Together, we can raise awareness and save even more lives.

Tuition is still going up at Missouri Southern State University, but it's tweaking the cost increase to credit hours to avoid a state fine. Missouri Southern's Board of Governors approved a 15 percent increase in student tuition last April, upping credit hours by $30. But state education law doesn't allow tuition increases beyond the consumer price index. To avoid a $1.1 million fine, MSSU adjusted down the tuition increase to $20 more per credit.
