Humboldt man impaled in boat accident on Neosho River

Updated:

One man was sent to the KU Medical Center and three others received minor injuries Monday evening when their boat struck a brush pile on Neosho River northwest of Humboldt, Kansas.

That's according to Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Director of Information Services Ron Kaufman.

Kaufman says they are investigating the incident.

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE ALLEN COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT

On the 19th of May 2014 emergency responders were dispatched to the scene of an injury accident on the Neosho River in the area of 900 St and Iowa Rd. Once responders arrived on scene the victim, Jerry Scheibmeir, 59 YOA, was located still in the boat he and three other friends had been fishing on. Scheibmeir had been impaled by a log while boating on the river.

I believe the quick response and collaboration of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, Humboldt Police Department, Humboldt Fire Department, Iola Fire/EMS and Rescue, Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Wildlife and Parks, Eagle Med, and the 911 Communications Center played a vital role with rescue and treatment of the victim considering the challenges posed by this type of rescue. From getting to the accident scene to the removal of the victim and safely getting him off of the water, up the river embankment and to the awaiting Helicopter in efforts to treat his injuries and get him to the hospital as soon as possible.

It is the professionalism that is shown during these times of extreme incidents that make me proud to be part of Allen County. To know that, no matter the magnitude of the situation all the Emergency Responders in Allen County can pull together to help our citizens.

As of this morning the victim was out of surgery and is still in critical condition. The investigation into the injury accident is still on-going at this time by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
