Joplin recovery organization receives $150,000 gift

Updated:
Rebuild Joplin, a post-tornado recovery organization, receives a $150,000 gift from the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri.

The check was presented during a special get together on some properties still needing to be developed because of the tornado.  Several organizations were there, including Children's Haven, Art Feeds, and the Area Agency on Aging.  These agencies have helped in the overall recovery process of Joplin.

The founder of Rebuild Joplin says donations are still very much needed.

"As time lapses and memory fades and other disasters happen, donor fatigue sets in this community.  It's been more challenging to raise dollars and to get volunteers to come," says Jerrod Hogan.

Hogan says the organization has built 135 homes since the tornado.

"Those roof tops represent families that are home.  To see all those families that are home and recognize that the remaining need is so small and do-able, we can finish this job.  And with continued support from Community Foundation, they've been one of our best partners throughout the whole way, and for them to continue funding the effort, for volunteers to still be coming to Joplin to help us rebuild, we're going to finish this," says Hogan.

By the end of the year, Rebuild Joplin hopes to build another 50 houses.
