Nevada Community Remembers Motorcyclist Killed in Accident

Updated:

Residents of Nevada, Missouri are working to cope with the loss of a beloved bike enthusiast.  May is motorcycle safety awareness month -- and the community hopes to make all drivers aware, that sharing the roadways can ultimately save a life.

"The four words a biker never wants to hear I didn't see the motorcycle...it's hard" says Christian Motorcyclist Association rider Don Martin says, trying to fight back tears.

He, like many in Nevada, say it's hard to keep from crying. But through the pain and grieving, friends and family of 37 year old Leonette Hammontree hope to send a bigger message.

"Her husband was in an accident just a mile from where her accident happened on Monday. We just want everyone to be aware and watch for them. Look twice" says Joelle Mason, a family friend.

Hammontree was killed Monday May 19th while riding her motorcycle. She was struck by an oncoming vehicle failing to yield.
A candlelight vigil and memorial ride was held in her honor Wednesday evening to spread awareness of safety.

"Take the time in intersections. Look twice save a life. That's not something we make up." says motorcyclist rider and member of Christian Motorcyclist Association, David Martin.

Many members say it's important to remember your basic drivers ed rules while on the road. Look left, look right, and left again before pulling into traffic.

As family members and friends continue to cope and help each other heal, support continues to pile in from the community. Hammontree's husband was also previously injured in a motorcycle accident earlier this month, which is why friends are hoping to bring awareness to the issue of motorcycle safety.

"My breath was taken away to see all the people come out for this. It was truly amazing. It shows the lives she's touched." Mason says.

Friends have set up a facebook page to support the Hammontree family. You can visit https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hammontree-Family-Support-Page/396615360477896 to find upcoming events and support.
