4-state veterans react to VA scandal

Joplin-based veteran Ron Mosbaugh says the medical care he receives today has come a long way.

"They're doing a lot better today than they did when I got back from Vietnam. Nobody wanted to go into the VA system and they turned that around."

Mosbaugh served for 31 years. He is 100 percent disabled. The care he receives is critical..

"The veterans deserve the best and I really feel that right now we're getting that."

Mosbaugh speaks at a time when the Department of Veterans Affairs has come under scrutiny for alleged neglect.

"I understand back east and they're having some problems in other locations, but to my knowledge, we don't have that back here."

Howard Spiva is the commander of American Legion Post 13 in Joplin. A World War II veteran, he believes the recent VA scandal stems from inefficient directors.

"And the employees, doctors, nurses, whatever they may be, took advantage of that idea and a lot of people lost their life over it," said Spiva.

Spiva says the recent problems may be the start of better care.

"This may be the rebirth of the health plan. All this problem that's happened. And we need this right here in Joplin for veterans. I think any many woman or child that holds up their hand to defend their country should be recognized."

Mosbaugh says that his experience with VA care in the 4-states has been good, but not matter what, veterans need to stand up for what they deserve.

"Just be persistent with the VA system. But they have all good intentions."
