Soldiers of times past remembered on Memorial Day at Ft. Scott National Park

Updated:
Memorial Day is, of course, a day to remember veterans, especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.  We look to the past for many wars and battles.  At the Fort Scott National Park, people from all over the region came to see what it was like for soldiers during the years of 1842 to 1873.  Some people were new visitors, others were returning.  Everyone we talked to on Memorial Day said what they learned at the Fort gave them more appreciation for soldiers of this time period.

"I wish I could have seen it back like it really was.  But it's nice, how this is, so that people can see it, especially the kids," said park visitor Robert Spitler.

"It kind of surprised me how, all the stuff that they ate, like the corn meal, compared to what we eat now," said Weston Marbery, a young boy who visited the Fort.

The Fort's park ranger said, "The sacrifice, I think that's the key term with all of this.  When you enlist, even though you may survive your enlistment period, you're still sacrificing your time."

One room at the Fort shows where soldiers slept in bunks.  There were two soldiers to a bed, and four total to a bunk.  The Fort's park ranger says the soldiers of this time period lived their lives uncomfortably so that many of us can enjoy our lives today.
