Jasper County Emergency Responders learn about autism

Updated:
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 1-in-68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder.

In 2009 six-year-old Jade Stone was diagnosed with global developmental delay, and high functioning autism.

"She is pretty fearless. There is not one thing she will not try or one thing she will not do," said Jade's Mother Ashley Stone.

The fearless side of Jade is a concern for her mother.

Recent data by the National Autism Association shows that 49% of all children living with autism are prone to wondering away from a safe environment.

"One day she woke up in the middle of the night, and had learned how to unlock our dead bolt and she walked out the front door. I heard her open the door so she didn't get but to the front porch," Stone said.

Jasper County first responders are learning basic strategies to effectively interact with, or respond to, persons with autism in all types of emergency situations.

"An increase of autism just increases our chances of someone that has the disability, and deal with then outside their confront zone," said Training Officer Carthage Fire Department Dan Myers.

A recent incident resulting in the death of a child prompted the agencies to take part in the class.
