Updated May 30, 2014 at 4:10 PM CST: Charges filed against Joplin teacher

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE JOPLIN POLICE DEPARTMENT

On May 30, 2014 the Jasper County Circuit Court filed charges of Statutory Sodomy 2nd Degree, Furnishing Pornographic Material to a Minor, and Statutory Rape 2nd Degree on Jessica Low.

The bond for these charges was set at $7,500.00 and she remains in custody at this time. The added charge of Statutory Rape 2nd Degree is as a result of a forensic interview that was conducted with both juvenile victims at the Children’s Center. One juvenile victim indicated that Ms. Low followed him home from school and they had sexual intercourse at his residence.

We do not believe at this time that either of the sexual acts that were performed on the juvenile occurred during school hours nor did they occur on school property. The Investigations Bureau is continuing to follow up on leads with this case.

Updated May 29, 2014 at 4:35 PM CST - Charges still pending against Joplin teacher

32-year-old Jessica Low was arrested at the Joplin's freshman-sophomore building Wednesday afternoon on charges of second degree statutory sodomy and pornography.

Low has worked as a Communication Arts teacher at the freshman sophomore building of Joplin High School for the past two years.

Police say the district got a tip and asked authorities to investigate.

The Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Unit checked into cell phones and found low had sent images of herself to several students.

Authorities say they discovered that Low was involved in a personal relationship with one student, which led to the sodomy charge.

School officials say they will aggressively pursue alleged abusers.

Police say there's been an increase in the use of technology to send sexual images..

"Remember, when you take that picture and you send that and you've lost control of that, and it may go many places you didn't intend for it to go even thought you may have intended it for one person, all that one person has to do is send it out to three or four of their friends and then they send it," says Lt. Matt Stewart of the Joplin Police Department.

"It angers me, it frustrates me to no end, to know those people are out there," says Joplin Schools Superintendent CJ Huff.

The Joplin School District placed Low on administrative leave after her arrest.  Huff says if the allegations are confirmed he will seek to have Low's teaching certificate revoked.

Two male students were interviewed today at the Children's Center.  Lt. Stewart says more charges are possible.

A Joplin High School teacher is in jail facing charges of sending pornography to students.

Authorities arrested Jessica Low, 32, Wednesday afternoon at the Joplin High School 9-10 Center.

She's facing charges of second degree statutory sodomy and sending pornography to minors.

"She had sent some inappropriate pictures of herself to the students," Lt. Matt Stewart of the Joplin Police Department.  "There's two male juveniles we're interviewing at the Children's Center today."

Joplin police would not say if Low admitted to sending the pictures but say investigators found through statements she had a personal relationship with a student.

Low works at the freshman sophomore building of Joplin High School.

Police say more charges could follow based on interviews with students.
