THE PUBLIC IS INVITED AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!! Please help us welcome home a hero as he and his family receive the keys to their new home.

HelpingaHero.org and The Patriot Charities joined forces to build a new Ryan Home in Kellswater Bridge for wounded warrior, SGT Drew Mullee, USA (Ret.) and his family.  SGT Mullee lost his leg and suffered multiple other injuries as the result of an IED explosion in Afghanistan. The home will be presented on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at noon.

The four-bedroom home is fully wheelchair accessible, includes wider doors and hallways, features an adapted bathroom, and has other safety features to support Drew's independence, as he continues to rebuild his life. Built on a homesite donated by Kellswater Bridge near the community's club, the specially designed residence is the 4th home Texas-based HelpingaHero.org has awarded in North Carolina. A 5th home is being planned near Fort Bragg in the Legacy Lakes Community.

Inspired by his father, who was awarded a Bronze Star with "V" for Valor while he served in Vietnam, SGT Mullee successfully graduated from Airborne school. Drew and his wife Jennifer, who was three months pregnant, were living in Bamberg Germany when his brigade deployed to Afghanistan.  On May 12, 2012, his unit was tasked to clear a building they suspected of housing an enemy bomb-producing operation.  While on dismounted patrol, Drew became suspicious of a rock formation and noticed colored wires on the ground. As he moved the head of his metal detector across the area, he knew he had found an IED. Moments later, he was hurled through the air and crashed into the ground, suffering traumatic brain injury, his left calf blown out the side of his leg, and his right leg lost at the knee. He somehow managed to remove his helmet and call for a medic, who applied tourniquets to both legs and saved Drew's life.

As he endured excruciating pain during the Medevac to the hospital, thoughts of Jennifer and the birth of his son kept Drew going. His family continued to sustain him as he began a year-and-a-half rehabilitation at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he had to learn to walk, eat and do everything all over again. In that same hospital, he watched the birth of his son, Easton, thanking God and the brave men and women in Afghanistan that he had survived to build a future with his wife and son.
