Dr. Alan Marble accepts position as MSSU President

Updated:

It has come full circle for Dr. Alan Marble.

"A short forty years ago I was here as a student and it's just surreal to think that I'm here in a different role," said Marble.

The Missouri Southern alumnus was named president at a special conference Tuesday, after serving as interim president for nearly a year.

"He's already, of course, made established relationship with the faculty, the students, the board of governors and has rapport with our local legislatures, the governor," said James Fleischaker

The quest for a new president began in December of last year. Members of the search committee spoke of the long, detailed process, which included choosing three final candidates from the nearly 60 applicants.

"One of the concerns was is that if this process dragged on, that some of the candidates might seek to take positions elsewhere, and we wanted to get it done was quickly as possible," said Fleischaker.

Officials say all three candidates were excellent, but Marble's momentum was key.

"The fact that he's gotten off to such a great start, you know, indicates that we can expect great things for the coming years," said Fleischaker.

Those who make up the majority of the university spoke about the news.

"I just think it's really important that he focuses on having really good campus security and safety and making sure that all the students are being taken care of here and that everybody gets a really good equal education," said Kaitlyn Judd, MSSU student.

In his acceptance speech, Marble said he aims to creating a positive educational experience that is parallel to his.

"I intend to do my very best that current and future students have the same access to a quality university experience at Missouri Southern that I had."
