Kids get hands-on with safety camp in SE Kansas

Some kids in Parsons, Kansas got some fun, hands-on experiences today.  It was part of a camp where about 100 kids learned about safety.  It included climbing out of smoke-filled rooms, to avoiding illegal drugs, and even how seat belts can help save lives during a rollover.

Emergency safety workers who volunteered for this event say the experiences are "fun" and "cool" but carry an important message.

"We hit the top ten injury issues that we deal with nationally," says Randy Grimmett with the Labette Health EMS.

Scarlett Hucke, who attended the camp, says she learned not to run near swimming pools.

"Because you might fall," says Hucke.

Alyssa Yeuebanks, who also attended the camp, says she also learned about swimming pool safety.

" stay in the parts I can swim in, so I don't drown," says Yeuebanks.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol and 911 communications workers were among those who did presentations.
