Ceremonies held to commemorate flag day

Updated:
Local boy scout troops and Elk members held a flag presentation at the Elks lodge in Joplin today to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the US flag. Boy scouts presented several different flags as members of the Elks read about the history.  Members say today marks a special day on American history and an opportunity to raise the flag high.

"We briefly present the history of each of the flags so that the members and the general public that are here understand the importance how the flag evolves over the course of our history," said Jonathan Bhend, organizer.

2014 also marks the 200th anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner.
