War Display may leave a Southeast Kansas Community

Girard, Kansas residents are asking the U.S. Department of Defense to allow a Vietnam helicopter to remain in the community's downtown district.

About 3,000 people live Girard, it's a community with broad support for military troops and veterans.

"Well this helicopter and this memorial is great pride I don't know how else to say it but great pride," said Gene Leigh the former Quarter Master of the Girard VFW Post 7479

In 1995 the Girard VFW acquired the utility aircraft, which is part of the memorial site.

However a recent decision to merge the Parsons VFW would mean giving up the caretaker duties of the helicopter. The merger happened, Leigh says, because a lack in membership involvement.

"We're just unable to sustain the activities a VFW is supposed to do for a community and keep it up," said Leigh.

The Girard City Council and Crawford County Commissioners are backing the Post with letters to the Department of Defense.
