Social media becomes civic media

Updated:
Social media becomes civic media.

The same social media we use to stay connected to loved ones, is spreading into city hall.

The city of Pittsburg has set up twitter accounts for each its departments.

"There are a lot of things we want to be able to share with people in a timely manner," said Pittsburg Assistant City Manager Jay Byers.

Twitter allows users to post no more than 140 characters instantly for followers.

Many police departments are using the application in emergency situations, now including Pittsburg P.D.

"If a crime occurs and were looking for a suspect's vehicle or maybe the suspect, or just need help finding a lost child we can get that out there quickly," said Pittsburg Police Chief Mindy Hulvey.

It's a way the city plans to connect with citizens at the click of a button.
