Area Agency on Aging faces funding cuts after Missouri governor vetoes more than $1B in spending

Updated:

A southwest Missouri nutrition program is facing funding cuts after Missouri Governor Jay Nixon vetoes more than $1 billion in state spending.

The Area Agency on Aging serves meals to seniors in Jasper, Newton, Barton and McDonald counties.   Meals are delivered to area senior centers and homes.

Recently Conway Truckload donated more than $3,000 to the program but officials say the statewide cuts could make a big impact.

"The money that the governor has vetoed was $400,000 and that was for the 10 area agencies in the state of Missouri, that's just a portion of what we get from the state but it wasn't actually new money, it was money that was meant to bring us up from our last budget cuts four or five years ago," says Stan Heater, CEO of the Area Center on Aging.

The nutrition program currently delivers approximately 25,000 meals each month.
