Joplin Church Raising Money for Tornado Victims

Updated:

The Byers Avenue United Methodist Church in Joplin is hosting its annual pie sale to raise money for Baxter Springs tornado victims.

Church members spend three days every year making  homemade pies to raise money for the church and to give back to the community.

About a dozen cooks create crusts from dough and mix fresh fruits and ingredients to fill shells.

They are making over 1100 pies this year and selling them to people online and at the church.

They will also use funds raised to pay for church events and buy new equipment not in the organization's budget.

"This is just so much fun, really," says pie manager Jane Obert, "We are dead tired exhausted at the end of the three days. We start at five or six in the morning everyday and work til late at night. The bonding that we get out of it is really great."

Previous sales have supported relief efforts in Joplin and Moore, Oklahoma.

This is the 21st year for the event.
