Carl Junction School District officials say early dismissal on Fridays will allow teachers to better collaborate

Updated:
Getting out of school early is not something you will generally hear kids complain about and this year, Carl Junction Schools will dismiss early on every Friday.

Jeff Lonie has two children who attend Carl Junction Schools.

His wife is currently applying for jobs, so he says the new dismissal time on Fridays could end up costing an extra hour of babysitting.

"It could be expensive," Lonie said.  "It would be a couple hours on Fridays, if it came to that."

Stay at home parents say the change will not affect them and they are excited for an extra hour of time with their kids.

"We can't wait to have that opportunity to get out early on a Friday and be able to extend our weekend a little bit," said Lori Funk, parent.

While the children go home, teachers and staff will stay.

"The teachers and staff, after the students leave, will meet generally by grade level or if they're in the secondary building by content area," said Dr. Kathy Tackett, Assistant Superintendent for Carl Junction Schools.  "They will look at student data, curriculum, instruction and make sure it is the highest quality that we can provide for all of our students."

Tackett says the new system will be more effective than that of previous years.

"When teachers meet on a weekly basis, they're really going to have a good handle on what they're doing in the classroom and how they're helping each individual student," she said.

Tackett says the weekly meetings will replace the former full day sessions, which means the kids will not be losing any class time.

Grades 7-12 will be released to the buses at 1:55 and K-6 at 2:10.

Tackett says it is roughly an extra hour that can make a big difference in student achievement.

"What teachers do in the classroom is going to benefit our students, ultimately, and every decision we make is based upon what's best for our kids," she said.

The Joplin Family YMCA offers an after school care program within the Carl Junction School District for parents who may need the assistance.
