Updated:

PRESS RELEASE MIAA:

Former MSSU Athletic Director Sallie Beard has earned the NACWAA Lifetime Achievement Award presented by Nike. The honor is bestowed annually to administrators who have dedicated their professional careers to advancing women in sport, rendered meritorious service and retired from or are no longer directly involved in the profession. Honorees are nominated by their peers and selected by past NACWAA Lifetime Achievement winners.

Sallie Beard served Missouri Southern State University as both a coach and athletic director for 37 years before her retirement in 2009. She was the Lions’ first head coach in women’s basketball, softball and tennis and later coached track and field. She was the women’s athletics director for 25 years before being named overall athletic director in 2001. Beard helped usher in a new era when MSSU moved from the NAIA to NCAA Division II and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) in 1989. Beard also served as MIAA president from 1999 until 2001 and was inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame in 2010.

The honorees will be celebrated October 13 at the NIKE Lifetime Achievement, Legacy and Presidential Leadership Awards Luncheon in conjunction with the 2014 NACWAA National Convention in Louisville, Ky.
