Joplin Humane Society receives renovations today thanks to a $10,000 grant

Updated:
The Joplin Humane Society is receiving several new renovations today, thanks to a $10,000 grant from Pedigree.

$5,000 from the grant will go towards purchasing dog food, while the remaining $5,000 covers the cost of renovations to the outdoor play yards, intake area and cat cages.

GreaterGood helped organize the volunteer efforts.

Nearly 20 volunteers are helping to complete all the work today, which includes painting indoor walls, adding shade units and exercise steps to each play yard and assembling larger cat cages.

Staff members say the small renovations make a big difference.

"After all the renovations are done, we're going to feel extremely blessed and really lucky to have such a great grant and the volunteers who came out to get the work done," said Tianna Fisher, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Joplin Humane Society.  "It will allow us to take better care of the animals, to offer them more enrichment and hopefully get them adopted quicker."

The Joplin Humane Society houses an estimated 360 to 400 animals at all times.

Staff members say the dogs will utilize the new shaded play yards and exercise steps for a couple hours each morning.
