Practice Report: Aug. 20

Press Release University of Arkansas:

Sweltering temperatures and billowing winds could not stop Arkansas football from fall season preparation as the Razorbacks continued training for their season-opening matchup at Auburn.

With the team less than a week away from their first game week preparation, Arkansas continued to work on both sides of the ball in individual and 11-on-11 drills.

Venue: Outdoor practice fields

Format: Full pads

Highlights: Early in Arkansas' practice, the offensive line showed off its blocking prowess in the red zone, paving the way for Korliss Marshall to scamper into the end zone... Junior safety Rohan Gaines set the defensive tone early with an impressive interception in team drills…The offensive and defensive lines then squared off in individual drills where defensive tackle Tawiwan Johnson showed off his impressive spin moves to get past the Razorback O-line and into the pocket… In a pass skeleton drill, freshman wide receiver JoJo Robinson made an effortless touchdown catch on the run, draped in heavy coverage… While the offense worked on timing and defensive coverage, the Arkansas defense broke into individual drills where the focus was on forcing and retrieving fumbles… Sparked by a pumping soundtrack, sophomore tight end Jeremy Sprinkle found open space to snag a pass from junior quarterback Brandon Allen, igniting ‘oohs' and ‘ahhs' from his teammates.

Quote of the Day: “It was great execution by the offensive line, everybody got latched on to their blocks. It's one of our running back goals to win all of our one-on-ones against safety's and cornerbacks. So I just made a good move on the safety, I hit the hole going full speed and I just had to go for it.”- Korliss Marshall (@KorlissM) on his 57-yard touchdown at the scrimmage on Saturday

Michael Smith (@CoachMichaelSmi) on players being consistent: “That's a big part of my position, making the guys more consistent. That's exactly what we're trying to get out of these guys. And once we get there, then I think we're going to have the depth that we're looking for.”

Jim Chaney (@CoachJimChaney) on being a more productive and efficient running team this season: “We'd like to be as efficient as we possibly can and continue down the path to being a physical offense. No matter what you do, if you don't have the success you want, you want to be better.”

Joel Thomas on facing Auburn in the season opener: “In all honesty, we've been looking at Auburn for a long time. They're a great team, coming off a national championship game, so we have got to come with our A-game to make this a good game.”

Hunter Henry (@Hunter_Henry84) on his performance at fall camp thus far: “I think I've had a really good camp. One of my big goals was to become a point of attack blocker, to be really physical in there and I think I've really done well with that.”

Brandon Allen (@BrandonAllen_10) on his brother Austin Allen's (@AustinAllen8) progress in the preseason: “I think he's had a great camp. He's really improved since the first day. I think all summer we've worked hard and he got into the play book a lot this summer. He really did his best to be mentally prepared for every practice and I've seen big strides from him.”
