New kiosk at Riverton roundabout pays tribute to historic Route 66 attractions

A newly constructed kiosk and rest area near the Riverton roundabout pays tribute to the conjunction of two historic highways, Route 66 and the US 400.

Funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration, the Kansas Department of Transportation began the $20,000 project in March.

The layout design and labor was provided by construction technology students at Pittsburg State University.

KDOT officials say the informational displays highlight some historic attractions for travelers along Route 66.

"It shows some of the things that they may want to spend a little more time exploring, which is good for Kansas because if they stay a little bit longer, they'll spend a little more money," said George Dockery, area engineer, KDOT.

Construction was formally completed by crews on Friday.
