History enthusiasts gather in Carthage to look at women's suffrage in Jasper County

The Powers Museum hosted a talk on Women's History In Jasper County historical accounts trace many influencers in the women's suffrage movement back to the area.

Mark Van Es spoke on the ideology of the area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

According to Van Es, Jasper County was quite progressive in the ideas of women and the right to vote.

"Something else that's really fascinating about the area is how many important and significant women that were part of the national stage for suffrage that were from Jasper County," said Van Es. "Emily Newell Blair, Ella Harrison, Annie Baxter. It's just a great story to really be able to research and look into."

Van Es says there has been a recent trend of looking at women's history on the local level.
