Little Balkans Day festival celebrates 30th anniversary

Updated:
The Little Balkans Day festival in downtown Pittsburg celebrates its 30th anniversary.

The festival is named after the European Balkans, from where many of the earliest Pittsburg residents originated.

Nearly 75 vendors lined Broadway Street between 1st Street and 8th Street, offering a variety of carnival rides, food, arts and crafts, animals and music performances.

Organizers say the event, funded by community sponsors, is a longtime tradition for many Pittsburg residents.

"We don't make a lot of money off the festival," said Brett Dalton, President, Little Balkans Day Festival Association.  "Our sponsors are the big thing. That's how it can happen."

One event at the festival provided a chance for children between the ages of 4 and 18 to audition to become the next 'Pittsburg Idol.'

More than 30 contestants performed a two minute song of their choice.

Some participants say the competition is great preparation for a future singing career.

"It's an awesome experience and you would have a lot of fun," said McKenna Shaw, 7th grader.  "Even if you don't win, it's still a bunch of fun."

"One day, if you're really good at it and you follow through with it, you can conquer all the things that you can do with it and you can take it really far," said Kate Walrod, 6th grader.

Prizes were awarded to top contestants.

The festival continues tomorrow with a golf tournament, train ride and fishing derby.
