Severe storms overturn two campers; other damages reported

Updated:
There's plenty of cleanup from last night's severe thunderstorms.  Emergency managers say most of the damages are located in Newton County, near Redings Mill.

Two campers were overturned at the Rivers Bend Campsite.  In the Silver Creek subdivision just outside of Joplin, a tree limb fell on top of a home's roof.  Officials from the National Weather Service say 75 mile an hour straight line winds were recorded in Redings Mill last night.

"It's an event that we typically see across the Ozarks, from a severe weather standpoint," says Doug Cramer with the National Weather Service Springfield.  "We know a good frequency of severe weather across this region.  And we mainly see some straight line winds.  A little bit of hail with the stronger storms, as well," says Cramer.

"We did have damaging straight line winds.  We're estimating those winds to be about 75 miles per hour, based on tree damage and then also the structural damage," says Cramer.

"We want to document our accuracy with our warnings.  So when storms create damage across the Ozarks, we want to take a look at it and assess the wind speed and what created that damage, and then assess what phenomena caused it," says Cramer.

Emergency officials say one person who was inside one of the overturned campers was taken to the hospital with a bruised hip.
