Labor Day severe storms cause damage and debris in southwest Missouri

Updated:
Stephen Jones' chainsaw has been his constant companion for several days.

"A lot of debris and the yard around, all around the house, the we're now working to clean up with assistance from my son, a friend of ours and my neighbor that lives behind up came down and helped," said Jones.

A line of severe storms late labor day night swept through northern Newton County wreaking havoc on Jones' Readings property.

He said the winds were roaring.

"Then at one time we thought we were hearing large pieces of hail which I think later proved to be walnuts that mother nature was throwing at our house."

The result: a mess. Uprooted trees and shrubs, misplaced house parts and broken pieces.

The natural landscape suffered the majority of the damage.

"We had some trailers that were damaged by the wind," said Ronnie Metcalf, Assistant Fire Chief in RedingsMill. "A lot of power line damage and cable damage."

Area officials, including the Redings Mill Fire Department and tree service companies, are working to clean up what the storms left behind.

For Jones, that's a full-time job right now. But there's a silver lining. Or perhaps, a cedar lining.

"We're going to have, probably, a lot of wood actually for next winter," he said.

The debris looks overwhelming, but he says he's taking it one day at a time.

"Whatever I get done everyday gets done and they'll be some waiting for me the next."

The Redings Mill Fire Department urges any area residents planning to burn storm debris to contact them first for safety precautions and burn conditions.
