Carl Junction to Vote on Tornado Shelter Bond This November - KOAM TV 7

Carl Junction to Vote on Tornado Shelter Bond This November

Updated:
Carl Junction School officials are seeking support for a 16.5 million dollar bond.

The proposition tornado safety bond would support construction for three separate, FEMA storm shelters at the schools.

Students we spoke with say they practice severe weather drills regularly.

"Since we were in 3rd grade they told us we were going to sit in the boys locker room for our tornado drills." says student, Alyssa Graves.

Her sister Emily says "There's so many people in that school that they have to crowd them together."

The school does not have storm shelters but hope voters will decide to fund them.

"I think our kids need to be safe. We seem to have a lot of bad weather down here." Sheila Buchle, A Carl Junction parent says.

The shelters would be multi-functional and serve as classrooms, a gymnasium, cafeteria, and kitchen.

Which is something officials say is a key part in the project.

"We feel it's a need for our students. We have seen these storms for many years. We were hit with a tornado in 2003. It's time to take action and quit waiting, and lets do it." Carl Junction School Superintendent, Phillip Cook says.

FEMA funds are unavailable to help fund the shelters.

If approved, homeowners would see an increase of $19 a year for every $100,000 market value home.

Voters will decide on the bond issue during this November's election.

If approved, construction would begin this spring and be completed for the 2016-2017 school year.
